Robust Video Coding

Organizers : Béatrice Pesquet-Popescu (ENST Paris) and Sheila Hemami (Cornell University)

There is an increasing interest in practical methods for video transmission which question well-established paradigms such as independent optimization of source and channel codes, the use of merely a single transmission channel, the complex-encoder/low cost-decoder model, and, in general, the separation between network layers.

Examples of such robust coding systems that will be discussed in this special session include:

  • joint source-channel coding
  • multiple description coding
  • scalable subband video compression
  • video coding with side information
  • cross-layer resource allocation in wireless video

These new techniques have shown that it is possible to achieve interesting trade-offs between error resilience, network-adaptivity and coding efficiency.
